With the tourist season fast approaching, that means more people.  More people means more cars.  Unfortunately, it does not mean more parking spaces.  This post will explain how to pay your parking fine in Almuñécar.  I am sure it is similar around Spain, but we will provide you details and help save you money!  If you want to understand what all of the different colored lines mean on the road and where to park, click here.

If you received a parking fine (for not paying for enough time initially, or either not paying at all), don’t be surprised if you see a large penalty.  Depending on the location, and date/time of the infraction, the fine shown on the ticket can be as much as €60!

Once you get over the shock of seeing the amount of fine, relax.  The good news is that if you pay the fine within an hour, the cost is approximately €3.40.  After that, the cost goes up to €6.70.  Not ideal, but better than €60!

Paying your Parking Fine at the Meter

The first step is to find a parking meter.  They’re normally pretty conspicuous, as they are on the sidewalks marked with a big “P”.  Most of the parking meters are the old style, and do not accept bills, so you may need to have a bunch of coins to pay for the fine.

  • On the front of the parking meter, you will see several buttons of different colors.  In order to pay the fine, press the BLUE button twice.  Deposit your coins, and then press the GREEN button.

  • There is a numeric keypad on the parking meter, so once you have put the coins in the machine, you will need to enter the ticket number listed at the top of the ticket.

  • Now that you have proof you paid the ticket, take a picture of the ticket and receipt.  On the payment receipt, there is a tear-off portion that you should keep for proof.  That tiny piece of paper is so easily lost, having a picture of it is good insurance.  In the event that you need to prove you paid the ticket in a month’s time, you’ll be able to do so with your picture.

With the fine paid, all that is left to do is to take the ticket and payment receipt (the big one, not the tear-off one), fold them together, and put them in the slot near the bottom of the parking meter.

Paying your Parking Fine at the Bus Station

If you’re not able to find a parking meter, or the meter is not functioning, the other alternative is to pay the fine directly at the ALSA bus station (Estación de Autobuses de Almuñécar) located on Avenida de Juan Carlos I (terracota building next to McDonald’s).

On the top floor there the Seccíon de Tráfico.  During the hours of 0800 – 1500, you can take your ticket and pay it there.

It’s pretty straightforward/convenient to pay the fine at the machine.  A little less so if you need to pay at the bus station, but just remember to pay it, so the fine doesn’t turn into that €60!

Note:  The amounts for the parking fine was are correct at the time of writing.  Your costs may be different.
