Planning a trip from Spain? Make sure travel insurance is on your checklist before you go.
Living in Spain gives us a wonderful opportunity to explore Europe, visit family back home, and discover destinations around the world. Whether you’re planning a weekend in Italy, a cruise through the Mediterranean, a long-awaited trip to the United States, or an adventure further afield, there’s always something exciting to look forward to.
But have you thought about what would happen if you became ill abroad, needed emergency medical treatment, lost your luggage, or had to cut your holiday short unexpectedly?
As an expat living in Spain, I understand that arranging insurance in another country can sometimes feel complicated. That’s why I help English-speaking residents find suitable travel insurance through Caser Seguros, part of the Helvetia Group.
The good news? Getting a travel insurance quote can be simple.

Why Do Expats Living in Spain Need Travel Insurance?
You might already have Spanish public healthcare or private health insurance. Perhaps you also have insurance through a credit card or another policy.
However, these arrangements don’t necessarily provide all the protection you need when traveling outside Spain.
Travel insurance can help protect you against unexpected expenses and travel disruptions, depending on the policy and coverage selected.
Here are some reasons to consider arranging cover before your next trip.
1. Unexpected Medical Expenses Abroad
An accident or sudden illness can happen anywhere. If you need medical treatment while traveling, the costs can be high, particularly in countries where healthcare is expensive.
Depending on your destination and selected policy, Caser travel insurance can cover eligible medical, hospital, surgical, and pharmaceutical expenses up to the limits specified in your policy.
Some plans offer medical coverage of up to €650,000 worldwide.
2. Medical Repatriation
What happens if you become seriously ill or have an accident and need to be transported back to Spain?
Medical repatriation can be an important benefit of travel insurance. Caser’s travel insurance options include repatriation or medical transport for covered illnesses, accidents, or other specified circumstances, subject to the policy conditions.
This is particularly worth considering if you’re traveling far from home.
3. Lost, Stolen, or Delayed Luggage
Arriving at your destination without your suitcase is frustrating enough. Having to replace essential belongings can make the situation even more stressful.
Depending on your plan, travel insurance may include assistance locating and forwarding luggage, compensation for eligible loss or theft, and reimbursement for essential purchases when luggage is delayed.
4. Trip Cancellation or Interruption
Imagine paying for flights, hotels, excursions, and other reservations, only to discover that an unexpected event prevents you from traveling.
Some Caser plans offer trip cancellation coverage, while others provide benefits for unused vacation days or certain travel interruptions. Cancellation protection may be optional on some plans and subject to specific conditions.
If you’ve invested a substantial amount in a holiday, it’s worth checking whether cancellation coverage is appropriate for you.
5. Assistance When You’re Traveling Alone
For those of us who enjoy solo travel, having access to assistance when something goes wrong can be especially reassuring.
Depending on the policy, benefits may include help arranging an extended hotel stay after a covered illness or accident, assistance with an accompanying family member, and support with returning home when necessary.
These benefits can be valuable when you’re thousands of miles from Spain and need help organizing your next steps.

Which Travel Insurance Is Right for You?
Not every traveler needs the same coverage. Caser offers different options depending on your destination, travel plans, and the protection you want.
As an exclusive Caser Seguros agent, I can help you explore the available options and request a quote.
Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance
Do you travel several times a year?
Perhaps you visit family in the United States, take regular European city breaks, or enjoy exploring different countries throughout the year.
An annual multi-trip policy may be a convenient option if you want coverage for multiple eligible trips rather than arranging a new policy for every holiday.
Caser’s annual multi-trip option for Spanish residents offers worldwide coverage, with individual trips limited to a maximum of 90 consecutive days under the policy described on my website.
This can be worth considering if you:
- Take several holidays throughout the year.
- Visit family or friends abroad regularly.
- Enjoy short breaks around Europe.
- Travel internationally and want to arrange cover in advance.
Eligibility requirements and coverage limits apply. A valid NIE is required for the travel insurance offered through my service, and trips must begin and end in Spain.

Single-Trip Travel Insurance
If you only have one holiday planned, single-trip insurance may be the better fit.
You can explore options for travel within Spain, throughout Europe, or further afield, with different levels of medical coverage and other benefits.
Caser’s three main options include:
- Vacation (Vacacional): A more economical option for travelers looking for essential protection.
- Comprehensive (Integral): Higher limits for selected benefits and additional coverage compared with the Vacation plan.
- Prestige: Higher coverage limits for many benefits, making it worth considering for international travel and destinations where medical costs can be particularly high. This includes up to 15,000 for existing conditions.
For example, Caser’s published plan information lists worldwide medical expense limits of up to €50,000 for Vacation, €200,000 for Comprehensive, and €650,000 for Prestige.
These are maximum limits, not guaranteed payments. The actual benefits depend on the selected policy, applicable exclusions, and individual claim circumstances.

Cruise Travel Insurance
Cruises are a popular way to explore several destinations in one trip, but they can involve different risks from an ordinary holiday.
For example, you may need medical assistance onboard, experience a delay, lose your luggage, or need to return home unexpectedly.
Caser offers a separate cruise insurance option designed for cruise-related travel needs. Depending on the policy, benefits may include medical expenses, repatriation, luggage assistance, travel delays, and certain cancellation or early-return expenses.
Important: Cruise insurance is a separate policy and is not automatically included in annual multi-trip travel insurance.
If you have a cruise booked, make sure you request the appropriate coverage.

What If You Have a Pre-Existing Medical Condition?
This is an important question, particularly for older travelers or anyone who has an existing medical condition.
Caser’s Prestige travel insurance information includes a specific benefit for certain pre-existing medical conditions, with a published limit of up to €15,000.
However, this does not mean every pre-existing condition is automatically covered. The precise circumstances, eligibility requirements, exclusions, and policy wording matter.
If you have an existing condition, please mention it when requesting your quote so that the relevant coverage can be checked before you purchase.
It is always better to understand the terms in advance than to discover a limitation when you need assistance.
How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?
There isn’t one fixed price for everyone.
The premium will depend on factors such as your destination, the type of policy you choose, the coverage limits, and any optional benefits.
For this reason, I recommend requesting a personalized quote rather than choosing a policy based on price alone.
When considering your options, look at:
- The maximum medical expenses covered.
- Whether your destination falls within the selected geographical area.
- Whether trip cancellation is included or optional.
- The benefits for luggage, delays, and repatriation.
- Any exclusions, deductibles, or special conditions.
- The maximum duration permitted for each trip.
The cheapest policy isn’t necessarily the most appropriate one for your circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance for Expats in Spain
Can I buy travel insurance if I live in Spain but am not Spanish?
Yes, foreign residents can apply for eligible Caser travel insurance products. The policies offered through my service require a valid NIE, and the trip must begin and end in Spain. Other eligibility and policy conditions apply.
Does my Spanish health insurance cover me when I travel abroad?
Not necessarily. Your public or private health insurance may have geographical limitations or may not include benefits such as luggage protection, trip cancellation, or repatriation. Check your existing policy before traveling.
Is annual travel insurance better than buying insurance for each trip?
It depends on how often you travel, the duration of your trips, your destinations, and the price and coverage of each option. Annual multi-trip insurance may be convenient for frequent travelers, while single-trip cover may suit an occasional holiday.
Does travel insurance cover trip cancellation?
Some Caser plans include cancellation benefits, while others offer them as an optional extra. Coverage depends on the selected policy and the reason for cancellation. Review the terms before purchasing.
Can I use annual travel insurance for a cruise?
Cruises require a separate Caser cruise insurance policy through my service. Please request a cruise-specific quote rather than assuming an annual multi-trip policy will cover your cruise needs.
How do I get a quote?
Visit my travel insurance page and complete the quote request form. If you aren’t sure which option suits you, you can contact me for assistance.
Please note: Coverage descriptions and benefit limits are for general information only and are not a substitute for the applicable policy terms and conditions. Eligibility, exclusions, limits, and optional benefits vary by policy. A quote does not constitute insurance cover; cover is subject to acceptance and policy issuance.
