The municipality of Almuñécar is a lovely place to live/visit, but in order to enjoy it, you have to get here. What are the airports closest to Almuñécar, La Herradura & Costa Tropical? If you’re flying from another country, or from within Spain, there are a number of airports to use. There are two main choices for airports (Malaga and Granada). We will also touch on other airports that can be used when traveling to Almuñécar.

2 Primary Airports Closest To Almuñécar & La Herradura
The airports closest to Almuñécar are those located in Málaga and Granada. They are approximately one hour away by car. There are bus routes that a traveler can use to get from the respective airports to the bus station in Almuñécar.
Málaga Airport [AGP]
The full name of the airport is Aeropuerto de Málaga-Costa del Sol, and is located 8 km (5.0 mi) southwest of Málaga. This is the primary airport that most travelers will use as it services many domestic and international destinations with many airline operations. Note that there are several airlines which have seasonal services which provide direct flights to Málaga: LINK
It’s a full-featured airport with many shops and restaurants. There are many car rental agencies both located on-site, or a short distance away by shuttle. There are also many options for parking (both on-site and off). More details about the airport can be found on their website: LINK
The main common complaint about the Málaga airport is that passenger pickup can be a hassle. This is mainly due to arriving passengers exiting the airport at a location that is not accessible by car. Taxi and shuttle services are close to the arrivals at Malaga airport, but those passengers getting picked up by friends or family will have to either walk up to the Departures area or walk past the taxis to a pickup area that’s not technically a sanctioned place for passenger pickup.
Either way, if you are picking some one up, or are being picked up, make sure you have a solid game-plan for pickup.

Granada Airport [GRX]
Known generically as the Granada Airport, the full name is Frederico García Granada-Jaén Airport. Compared to Málaga Airport, it is much smaller with fewer services/conveniences. The recommendation is to fly into/out of the Málaga airport, but there are cases where using Granada Airport makes sense. The website for the Granada airport is here: LINK

Additional Airports in Spain
The other airports that are commonly used are Almería, Seville, Alicante, and Madrid.
Madrid Airport [MAD]
This is the biggest airport that serves Spain, and provides a large number of domestic/international destinations. It is under a 6-hour drive to Almuñécar, and it’s very straightforward once you get out of the city. If you are taking a bus (ALSA), travel time is roughly 7 hours with 4-5 stops. Cost is reasonable and is in the €25-€40 range for a one-way ticket, but check pricing on the ALSA website. Book your tickets early for better pricing.
There is no direct train service from Madrid to Almuñécar, so you would need to travel to either Málaga or Granada. The high-speed train (AVE) from the Madrid-Atocha station takes approximately 4 hours to get to either Granada or Málaga. The cost varies widely, so check with the train for accurate pricing.

How to book Cheap flights to Spain!
These are tips for cheap flights to Spain in addition to cheap flights from Spain to other countries as well. I usually use a search site to find the best deals.
Skycanner
My preference is skyscanner, as they have many options to find the cheapest flight.
- You can just type in “fly from” Malaga and then search for “everywhere” as your destination. If you are looking for good deals and not sure where to go, this is a wonderful option.
- It also gives you a feature to search for flights for an entire month, so you can find the cheapest day to fly (if your schedule is flexible).
- You may also do a search for the cheapest month of the year.
- It is best to search using the local currency.
Check for the best deals here on Skyscanner. (you may set your language and currency as well)
Vueling
If you are looking to fly within Spain, Vueling is the Spanish airline. You may want to look directly on their website for deals too.

Omio
My preference if open to various options of transport is Omio, as they have many options to find the cheapest or fastest way to get to your destination. Sometimes the train or bus is faster than taking a flight.
- You can just type in your departure and destination with dates and let it suggest to you the cheapest, fastest or best route to take.
- There is a tab for flights, trains or buses, so you can select the one you prefer.
- Filters will be on the left side of the page, after you do you search. This way you can narrow down the time of day you would like to arrive or depart as well as other features.
- It is best to search using the local currency.
