Expert tips from Bob:
This is a linksy beachside course situated just outside Motril in Playa Granada. This is generally a flat course and, therefore, easy for the walkers. Buggies and trollies available for hire, as are clubs. Costs are relatively cheap – 95 Euros for two sharing a buggy. Interesting holes are the 5th, 6th and 7th in “the cage”, which are built around a lake and water is always in play on these. Also, the 13th, a par 3 played on to an island green surrounded by water.
Most people will want to lay up, but fortune favours the brave, if you can stop the ball rolling off the back into the water. Some holes with narrow approaches which make life interesting but there are also some annoying internal out-of-bounds. Generally, this is a very enjoyable course for the mid to high handicappers. The terrace bar is right on the beach and one of the best places around to have a meal. Get in early at lunchtime because the Spanish fill it up very quickly.
At the time of writing (March 2018), due to an ongoing problem with the tax authorities, the course has had part of its land taken over by the Spanish state and has been forced to cut from 18 holes to just 10, but management have assured the regulars that by April it will be back to 18…as this is Spain, think July rather than April.
Excellent driving range and practice facilities but the shop and the changing areas are very small.
Golf Granada

This hill was chosen for its shape, where the fairways are enhanced with its natural contours. From most of its holes you can soak up stunning panoramas of the mountains and city. It’s common to use the natural beauty as points of reference for the game, with some of the most picturesque and characteristic enclaves of the city: the Alhambra, Torre de la Vela, Alfaguara. This is just a 60-minute drive to the north from Almuñécar. Click here for more info.
Expert tips from Bob:

Expert tips from Bob:
To be found just off the N340 about halfway between Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga. This can be a difficult track, especially when the wind blows. Only the hardy will want to walk it, because it has a couple of heart-attack hills. It is a difficult course to master first time out. Some of the holes are punishing if you do not hit into the sweet spot of the fairway.
The tee shot on the 13th is a prime example – hit a driver down the middle and you would normally be happy, but the fairway narrows around about the landing spot and the likelihood is that you will kick to the right into some heavy tufted rough, which can leave you with no second shot and a long way to reach the green. If that wasn’t enough it is followed by a par 3 downhill with masses of rough and a pond right in front of the green…take a good supply of balls!
Many people don’t like this course first time out but persevere and it will grow on you. Costs are mid to high with a round running at about 70 euros each and another 24 for a buggy. Driving range and practice putting green are small. The pro shop has a broad selection of everything you need.
The changing rooms at Baviera are very good and the staff in the pro shop are both cheerful and friendly – all of them speak good English – but the bar is the place for a drink rather than a meal. Regulars moan frequently about the quality of the food.
Antequera Golf
Antequera Golf is much more than a beautiful 18-hole golf course located in the centre of Andalucia, at the base of the Natural Park of El Torcal de Antequera (Malaga). It is a demanding golf course, as well as being ecological and surrounded by protected species. It is perfect for experiencing the best golf in privileged surroundings with spectacular views and all the facilities you may need. This is just a 90-minute drive to the west from Almuñécar. Expert tips from Bob:
It´s been a while since I played this course, but I remember an interesting track with one hole which plays across two lakes…that one really gets the adrenaline going! I don’t remember too many flat holes. In fact, my son had to come back and help me and my trolley up one of the hills towards the end of the round.
You get a sense of how hilly this course is as you drive up to the clubhouse. The holes seem to wind around the hill that the clubhouse is built on. Buggies are a must if your fitness is in any doubt at all.
This course lies just 100 metres from the main A7 road about halfway between Malaga and Torre del Mar. the course spreads across to both sides of the road and there is some traffic noise, although it is not off-putting because the cars are usually high up on a flyover.
It’s a hilly course, with long walks between some of the holes. I’ve played it twice and the greens were in relatively poor condition both times. Also, it’s easy to get out of bounds. Not my favourite, but very definitely a good test.
Good changing room/shower facilities and a really nice bar and terrace to relax while you figure out how to beat the course next time around!
