Maria’s Tinto de Verano is the perfect refreshment for those hot summer days. Shhh, don’t tell, but we love them year-round! Tinto de Verano is a refreshing chilled wine-based cocktail, which literally translates as summer red wine. It is very similar to the popular Sangria, but much easier to make. It can be bought ready-bottled from supermarkets, but it won’t taste as good as Maria’s recipe!
Sangria is considered more commercial and “touristy” as it requires more time to make and is often sold in restaurants at a more expensive price. Tinto de verano emerged from Spain in the mid-twentieth century , and is common at local parties, festivals, and bars. You can always find it where drinks are affordable and consumed in volume. Other varieties include red wine and gaseosa, red wine and orange soda, rosé wine with lemon or orange soda. There is also a mix of red wine and cola is known as calimocho.
It is easy to make just one or two glasses or you can even make it by the pitcher and share with friends. We have provided both recipes for you below, but you can always experiment with your taste buds and alter things as you desire.

Maria’s Tinto de Verano
Ingredients
- Red Wine (It doesn’t need to be expensive, but don’t get the cheap stuff either.)
- Lemon Fanta (or your favorite brand of lemon soda or fizzy drink)
- Martini Rosso Vermouth (it needs to be the Rosso, or it isn’t going to be the same)
- Ice Cubes
- Lemon slices for garnish
Directions
By the Glass: (serves 1)
- Red Wine (100-120 ml or 1/2 cup)
- Lemon Fanta (1/2 of a can, 165 ml, or 2/3 cup)
- Martini Rosso Vermouth (splash or 1-2 tablespoons)
- Ice Cubes (3-4)
- Lemon slices for garnish
Use a pint style glass or a large wine glass. Add 3-4 cubes of ice. Pour the wine over the ice. Add the lemon Fanta and the Martini Rosso. Stir gently with a spoon. Garnish with a lemon slice in the drink and an additional slice on the lip of the glass.
By the Pitcher: (serves 8)
- 1 bottle of chilled Red Wine (750 ml or 3 cups)
- 1 litre of Lemon Fanta (1000 ml or 4 cups)
- Martini Rosso Vermouth (75ml or 1/3 cup)
- Ice Cubes (3-4 per individual glass)
- Lemon slices for garnish
Use a 2 litre serving pitcher (plastic or glass). Pour pre-chilled wine in the pitcher, add the lemon Fanta and the Martini Rosso. Stir gently with a spoon. Garnish with lemon slices in the pitcher. Pour over ice in a pint glass or large wine glass. Garnish with a slice of lemon on the lip of the glass.
