For some of our readers in the campo or in parts of La Herradura, Nerja is just as easy to access as Almuñécar. We are regularly asked for information about getting a PCR test in Nerja and general questions about where to find a doctor in Nerja who speaks English. We will share the information we know about the coronavirus test and the Nerja Medical Center.
What is a PCR test for COVID 19?
PCR test:
A PCR test for COVID 19 testing is used to detect the genetic material of the virus from a sample taken from the patient. This sample could be collected using a swab being placed in the nose/throat or using a saliva sample. Results usually take around 24h.
The PCR is considered the Gold Standard of testing for the virus.
Antigen test:
There are many types of antigen tests available. At our medical clinic in Nerja, we use a lateral flow test which is widely accepted for international travel. This type of test detects not the genetic material of the virus (like the PCR) but proteins on the surface. The advantages of this test are that the results are available within about 10 minutes and a flight certificate can be issued straight away, all at a reduced cost.
Antibody tests:
These tests take a little bit of blood from the tip of the finger. The blood is analyzed to see if your body has been in contact with the virus in the past and also if the body is defending itself from the virus at the moment. Results come out in around 10 minutes and provide useful information but, please take into account this test is not accepted for flying.
