Driving from Málaga Airport to Almuñécar and Back

Most people planning to visit Almuñécar will be flying into the Málaga Airport (AGP) and this means driving from Malaga Airport to Almuñécar.  While it is just about a 1 hour drive to the center of Málaga from Almuñécar, I would allow about 1 hour and 20 min from the airport.  The Málaga Airport (AGP) is located on the west end of the city and Almuñécar is to the east.  Once you are on the highway, it is smooth sailing and easy to reach.

Faro de La Herradura (The La Herradura Lighthouse)

Picture a sentinel in an old stone watchtower, perched high up on the cliffs of Punta de la Mona.  He can see for miles out to sea and along the coastline, with mountainous lands jetting right into the sea.  He is there protecting the castles and the nearby villages.  There’s nothing but the rocky cliffs with the sea crashing below.  He has means to communicate with the neighboring watchtowers along the coast, via light signals.  This was the life of a watchman back in the 1700’s.

The Punta de la Mona tower (Torre Punta de la Mona) was originally built as a watchtower in the 1700s and was converted to a lighthouse in 1992.  Now the Faro de La Herradura or the La Herradura lighthouse, with must see stunning views of Almuñecar and La Herradura.

Where Are The Speed Cameras in Almuñécar & La Herradura?

Did you know there are speed cameras in Almuñécar?  This shouldn’t be a big surprise, as there are road signs clearly marking the speed radar zone.  That said, when you have beautiful scenery you are looking at or on the hunt for a parking space, you can easily miss those signs.  Needless to say when you receive that multa (fine) in the mail, with a photo of your car, it doesn’t feel good.  Of course the next reaction is denial and that it couldn’t have been you, as you don’t speed.
