What is Fiestas de las Cruces de Mayo?

Normally, the Fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo means Festival of the May Crosses.  It is a fiesta celebrated throughout Andalucía, but there is also a contest.  The Ayuntamiento chairs a competition with impressive displays of decorated crosses, with prizes awarded.  The prizes range from €700 for the winning Cross, €500 for second, and €300 for the third in each Almuñécar & La Herradura.

Each display will be judged on the natural decoration of the Cross, the floral display, lighting, the environment.  They will also be looking for traditional cuisine served as well as originality.  Usually groups of neighbors, friends, associations, Brotherhoods, and the like enter the contest.  (No contest in 2021)

Who participates?

At a minimum, each Catholic brotherhood (cofradía) or neighborhood association has a pop-up bar next to its cross.  There may also be local groups or associations participating.  They will serve drinks and traditional tapas to raise funds to finance various local festivals including Holy Week (Semana Santa) and the local Fair (Feria).  Not only will you see their beautiful display of the decorated cross, usually in a room or building, there may also be additional entertainment offered.  Each neighborhood or brotherhood will have very different displays from modern to traditional Spanish.

The department of fiestas usually creates a list of those who have entered the competition and provide a map, so you may visit them all.  They are typically located in the town plazas and are fairly easy to find.

When is Cruces de Mayo?

Cruces de Mayo is celebrated on May 3 each year and the fiesta is usually the closest weekend to that date.  For 2021 there will not be a display of  crosses.  12:00 Friday, May 1st and 12:00 Sunday, May 2nd

History of Cruces de Mayo?

Religiously, the festival is rooted in the search by Byzantine Empress Saint Helena for the cross on which Jesus died, but the popular traditions connected to the festival certainly originate from pagan traditions brought to Spain by the Roman Empire.

2021 (a little different)

The 2021 Cruces de Mayo program will be a little different again this year, due to the COVID 19 pandemic

12:00 Friday, May 1st and 12:00 Sunday, May 2nd

The City Council of Almuñécar celebrates this weekend the feast of the May Crosses with a traveling Cross.  La Cruz will tour the main squares of the town and will be animated by the singing of María Gómez La Canastera and the guitar of Niño Carmelo.

The Department of Festivities of the Almuñécar City Council does not want us to miss another year without celebrating the popular May Crosses festival and for this reason, it is going to celebrate this festival this coming weekend, Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 May, with a traveling cross that will walk through the squares of the sexitana town.

“We cannot hold a crossing contest, as is tradition, to avoid crowds for three days, but at least we want the spirit of this party, which overflowed with joy among the neighbors, to be maintained in its proper measure with itinerant entertainment.  In this sense, every day, starting at 12 noon, we will try to bring music to the squares, ”said García Gilabert.

The animation of the traveling cross will be in charge of the local artists María Gómez “La Canastera”, singing, accompanied on guitars by Niño Carmelo.  They will be in charge of bringing joy to the “Cultureando” caravan, as we did last summer.  “Our intention is that tradition is not lost and bring joy to the squares from the caravan with a musical atmosphere, as it cannot be otherwise in a festival so popular and so deeply rooted in the festive calendar of our municipality,” as said by the mayor of the Fiestas de Almuñécar, Alberto García Gilabert.
