Christmas Almuñécar, La Herradura & Surrounding Areas 2019

The holiday season is upon us and there is so much going on!  It is magical to experience (Navidad) Christmas in Almuñécar, La Herradura & the surrounding areas.  We also know it can be difficult to find out when and where things are happening.  We’ve decided to share what we know here for you and as we learn more, we will just keep adding to this same post.  Many places don’t publicize until a few days prior to the event.  We aren’t sure why, but as soon as we find out more, we will continue to add to this post.

Fiestas de Otivar – Inmaculada Concepción (6-9 December)

At the beginning of December each year we can look forward to the Fiestas de Otivar, in honor of the Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate Conception)!  This beautiful pueblo blanco is perched in the hills about 20 minutes outside of Almuñécar.  The village comes alive for 3 days and nights, with events, music, lights, food and fun.

Fiestas de La Carrera Almuñécar – Immaculate Conception (Dec 8)

Fiestas de Torrecuevas (Fiestas de la Chirimoya) Almuñécar

The barrio of  Torrecuevas Almuñécar hosts the Fiestas de la Chirimoya to celebrate the harvest of the chirimoya (a custard apple), in honor of the Virgen Madre.  The Chirimoya Festival of barrio Torrecuevas, usually includes 4 days of celebration, activities, music, dancing, eating and drinking.  The Fiestas de la Chirimoya usually takes place around the 12th of October, which is also Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Heritage Day) and Fiestas de Pilar.

The second week of August means it’s time for the Almuñécar Feria and Fiestas Virgen de la Antigua.  Time for celebrations in honor of the town’s patron saint, Virgen de la Antigua.  It’s nearly a week full of food, drinks, music, carnival rides, and a procession.  It all ends on August 15th with the biggest night in Almuñécar ‘s list of annual festivals and the most spectacular fireworks display around!

Fiestas Virgen del Carmen Almuñécar & La Herradura (16th July)

Food, drinks, carnival rides, procession, boats and fireworks are what you will get when you celebrate the fiestas Virgen del Carmen Almuñécar!  This usually includes 3-4 days of activities and fun at the western end of San Cristobal Beach.  Each night is full of people gathering at the makeshift bar on the paseo, as well as kids enjoying the small carnival, plus you can’t go wrong with churros and waffles at Elvira’s open late!  Then on July 16, it’s the day of Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen and sailors.  The brotherhood will take her and set sail the streets in a procession and then to the waters to bless her in the midst of a festive atmosphere.

On July 16, the day of the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated in Almuñécar. The Virgin is the patron saint of the neighborhood of Los Marinos who, proudly walk their patron saint through San Cristobal.   Where they dance and embark her to the Peñón del Santo where fireworks are displayed.
